Wk2 B: Business Research
I have chosen to research five massage and spa businesses since that is the business industry I am in. Here are the businesses in no particular order:
Cal-a-Vie Health Spa
- https://www.cal-a-vie.com/
- Cal-A-Vie Health Spa is a luxury wellness retreat located in Vista, California, USA. It is a high-end destination known for its holistic approach to health and well-being. The spa offers a range of amenities and services, including fitness classes, spa treatments, nutritious dining options, and personalized wellness programs.
- Cal-A-Vie uses Facebook, Instagram and Pinterest. They have 16.8K followers and post twice a week on Instagram and seem to favor this platform. They have diverse content that is informative. The have 6.2K follewers on Facebook and post about once per week. They also have a Pinterest account but do not interact with it much.
- Cal-A-Vie uses a few different platforms. They have a larger following and cater more to Instagram. Their website is nicely put together and easy to use.
Sun Massage
- https://sunmassageca.com/home
- Sun Massage is a local massage therapy clinic located in Murrieta, CA.
- Sun Massage has a facebook account that has 6 followers.
- Sun Massage has a high Yelp rating, but not much interaction on their Facebook account. The last time they posted was August 2022. Their business must come from word of mouth and the fact that their prices severely undercut other therapists.
Massage Envy
- https://locations.massageenvy.com/california/murrieta/39400-murrieta-hot-springs-rd.html
- Massage Envy is a national franchise spa that provides massage therapy, skin care, and stretch.
- The local Massage Envy branch manages their Facebook account. They have 750 followers and post about one time per week. Their X (21.3K followers), Instagram (44.8K followers), Threads (4289 followers), and TikTok (922 followers) accounts are managed by the national branch.
- Massage Envy posts regularly to their social media accounts, except for X. They haven't posted to X since 2017.
LaRue's Massage & Bodywork Spa
- https://larues.massagetherapy.com/?fbclid=PAAaaLKdeuKEvKe3QpGLbnUfqStmWQqnRt-Q79teUknveXTP7Xu0WZVtcfRnA_aem_AYA7f1v6nO3RDT0Og5UJhApD7pFLtjtyawVyk5bCdRDdzQPstuUaZ8bGSTMt2DzP9MA
- LaRue’s Massage & Bodywork Spa is a local spa in Murrieta, CA. They are a small business and perform massage and esthetician services.
- Facebook (1.1K followers), Instagram (462 followers)
- This business uses their social media accounts to communicate to their customers. Most of it is off-putting. When we first moved to Murrieta, my husband surprised me with a spa trip to this place, and my experience wasn't all that great. I didn't bother researching them after the experience, I just knew I wasn't going back. Now that I've read they way they speak on through their social media accounts, I can see why I felt the way I did. Customers seem like a burden to them.
Silver Liner Mobile Massage
- https://www.silver-liner.com/
- Silver Liner Mobile Massage services, Orange County and Inland Empire. They bring the spa to the client. They also have a wellness retreat in Wine Country, Temecula, CA
- Social media accounts: Instagram (1.5K followers), Facebook (374 followers)
- I happened to see this company interviewed on YouTube when I first considered being a strictly mobile massage therapist back a few years ago. I wanted to reach out to the owner and pick her brain, but my shyness got in the way. I've since decided that I don't want to do mobile, since it's hard on the back if you are not set up like this company is. Anyway, they seem to communicate more personally on Instagram and keep it professional on Facebook. The following on Instagram is much larger, and I think it's due to the authenticity they show there.
Since embarking on this research study, I realized that not many businesses utilize social media and the ones that do are not consistent, myself included. Your following seems to be more interactive when you post more and either let them into your life or provide them with education. When your posts are static and don't really offer much your account seems to be quiet.
I have a hard time letting my actual friends and family in on what my life is like, so sharing that with the world is going to be interesting. Once I have a strategy for my social media accounts, I think it will be easier to decide what can be shared and what I can keep to myself. The only I account I saw that seemed to have a strategy was the Cal-A-Vie Spa's account. Silver Liner Mobile Massage is consistent, but I'm not sure if they are actually following a strategy.
